Predators and weather are two of the largest things that you need to safeguard your chickens from, so that they feel comfortable enough to lay their eggs.

Where Should Your Coop Be Placed?

How to build a coop that meets your chicken’s needs isn’t difficult. The first thing you have to do is determine where to build up – check that the ground for the reason that area doesn’t become so saturated that water can pool up.

Protecting Against Predators

The area where you place your coop is going to need to be level, but it also must be raised from the ground to ensure it is tougher for predators. Combine some wire with raising it off the ground and this will help.

It isn’t just the ground level that you need to take care of in the case of predators, you might get hawks and other birds interested in your smaller chickens. This is why it’s so essential that your chickens are properly protected in and outside of the coop.

On the Inside of the House

It should never get too humid inside of the coop house, so include an opening where the air will get in. This could come in the form of a window, or even a vent. When people are learning about the chicken coop, how to build it themselves, they simply carve a hole and nail a screen over it, which is a bad shortcut to take. This really isn’t recommended as you will need to have the ability to close that opening if the weather turns bad.

Chickens aren’t one of the best birds for flying, so don’t put the perches too high from the floor – it’ll only hurt them if they fall. Three or four feet off the ground is the best practice. The nesting boxes are placed lower down, and have to be deep enough to be comfortable for your chickens. You need to think about how you’re going to clean the coop, so build the nesting boxes with a slanted top and they’ll be far easier to access. The front of the nesting box should have a ledge for the chicken to get in and out.

When designing a chicken coop, how to build one that lasts means make sure you consider the long run and follow the instructions carefully. Put the effort and time in now and also you’ll save hassle in the future.
